Tent Types

From small instant pitch tents to large family tents, there is likely to be a tent available to meet your camping needs.

Although there are in excess of a dozen recognised styles of tent, we shall focus here on a few of the most popular types found on today's campsites:

Ridge tent
Ridge tents are a very stable, easy to pitch type of tent, having a pole at each end. Occasionally, the poles may be linked by a cross-pole (ridge) that supports the tent shaped roof.

Due to the sloping roof, head height can be limited making them less than ideal if you are a camping family wanting to stand up and freely move around within the tent.

Tunnel tent
Tunnel tents are the most popular style of family camping tents and are available in a wide range of styles and sizes. Typically, the tunnel shape is created by using 2-3 flexible tent poles in parallel, with each pole arranged in a semi-circle to give the tunnel or dome shape.

When compared to the heavy steel poles that are often used in large tents, the flexible material used for dome tent poles is significantly lighter, providing a weight advantage in transport and handling on the campsite.

Combination tents
Modern large family tents are often a combination of different styles, giving the camper the benefit of having the style best suited to each area of the tent. For example, a number of major manufacturers produce tents that combine a domed living area with tunnel shaped sleeping accommodation.

Geodesic tents
These tents are normally produced in small sizes, are very stable and well suited for extreme weather conditions. They are popular with mountaineers who need a tent that can be quickly pitched on an exposed and windy mountain side. Extreme camping!

Quick-pitch tents
Quick-pitch tents erect themselves and are manufactured with a coiled, sprung frame. The frame is permanently fitted into the fabric of the tent and when twisted forms a circle. This circular shape when packed can be a bit of a problem if you are trying to transport it in a shallow rectangular car boot or roof box.

To pitch the tent, the sprung frame is unleashed and the package opens out into a tent. Simply peg in the tent and you are camping within minutes.

Dome tents
A popular choice with campers, the dome tent consists of a square shape (two flexible poles in a semi circle crossing in the middle) or hexagonal shape (three flexible poles).

The ends of these poles are typically fixed to a metal pin at the base of the tent (often the fitted groundsheet) connected to an adjustable webbing strap. Dome tents give good headroom across a broader area due to the more vertical sides; however this advantage is countered by the fact that the largest dome tents can have stability issues.

Frame tents
These are traditional tents, offering lots of space, headroom and stability. The steel poles offer a rigid frame but make the tent considerably heavier than the tent types described above and they can also take longer to erect.

Other types of tent that you may like to investigate are pods, vis a vis and trailer tents.

The Best Camping Gadgets

The Super Solar Shower
Avoid those long queues at the campsites showers by bring your own portable shower. The pack takes up little room in your backpack yet will hold a surprising 20 liters of water. Placed out in the sun the Solar Shower will warm the water in under 3 hours, though perhaps not ideal if you want a shower first thing in the morning, it will certainly be refreshing after a long day out walking or sight seeing. It is also great for the wilder campers among you who really get back to nature and forgo traditional campsites.

Inflatable Banana Carrier
While this might not seem the most essential of items it certainly solves the problem of having squashed bananas in your backpack. Bananas are a brilliant source of energy, which is vital for those hiking trips, yet placing bananas in your bag often end in disaster with an uneatable mush. With the Banana carrier you can make sure your favourite fruit is still edible when you want a snack.

Wind-Up Phone Charger
The wind-up phone charger means you can keep in touch even if you don't have access to any power supply. To charge your phone you simply have to crank the winder to produce electricity that charges your phone. The winder is very easy to use and little force is need meaning people of all ages will be able to use this device. It's always important to have your phone charged up so if you ever do find yourself in trouble you will be able to call for help

Head Torch
While perhaps not the most stylish of items a head torch is extremely useful. By using one you will be able to keep your hands free which is great if you are having to put up a tent in the dark or are cooking a night time meal. For the more fashion conscious amongst you, you can buy brightly coloured or even sparkling head torches so you can stand out from the crowed.

Solar Fairy Lights
To bring a more festive atmosphere to your camping trips why not put up some solar powered fairy lights. During the day the lights will need some direct sun so at night the lights can shine and really enhance an evening barbeque or a romantic night under the stars.

Emergency Phone Charger
An essential for any trip is to make sure your phone is charged should any emergency arise so that help can be called quickly. This is however quite tricky if you have been camping for a week with little access to electricity as even the best phones will be running low on battery by now. This device will enable you to have a n extra 2 hours of battery life should you need it. A simple AA battery can be inserted in to the charger and provide that extra bit of life for your phone. For the music fans it will also work with your ipod so you don't have to be with out music for that long boring ride back home.

Waspinator
Wasps are often one of the biggest pests when you venture into the great outdoors and it can be a real hassle to get rid of them and even more difficult to keep them away. The Waspinator works by simulating a rival wasp nest, fooling the wasp into thinking it has wondered into a rivals treaty, rather than risk a fight the wasp will soon flyway. This is an environmentally friendly way of riding yourself of one of the camper's biggest enemies.

Choosing the Right Sleeping Bag

By Steve H.

So, you've bought a backpack, a tent, some other gear. Now you need a sleeping bag. There are about as many sleeping bags to choose from as there are backpacks or tents, but it's an essential piece of gear for backpacking in the wilderness or even somewhere locally. Choosing a sleeping bag can be time consuming, much the same as buying a pack or a tent, but here's some info that may help you in your decision.

When looking at sleeping bags, you'll find that there are two types of bags, down & synthetic. Down is the lightest & warmest of the two, hands down. Down is considered the best between the two types. Yet it should be noted that over the last several years, synthetic sleeping bags have come a long way. Down is generally more money than synthetic. It's lighter & compacts smaller than synthetic bags of the same temperature rating. However, down bags do not do well in wet weather. Once down becomes wet, it loses its loft & its thermal characteristics. The time required to dry a down bag can be several hours to over a day. Therefore, many backpackers & campers in New England, as well as other wet climates, do not rely on down sleeping bags. In extreme cold temperatures, down is the choice for most people.

Both types of sleeping bags are beneficial, so which one should you buy? First of all, ask yourself where you'll be backpacking or camping. This will help determine what type of bag you should be considering. If you'll be located in a hot & dry climate, but with temps that fall quite low at night, then you may be best to go with a down sleeping bag. If you'll be sleeping in warm temps, a lightweight synthetic bag will be more beneficial. If the climate is wet & humid, I'd suggest bringing a synthetic sleeping bag. Synthetic bags dry quickly once they've become wet.

Many people want to buy one sleeping bag that will work year round. This is possible, provided you camp in temperatures & climates that fall within a similar range. Yet many enjoy backpacking & camping in all 4 seasons, so one bag will not likely fill every application. Everyone is different. Some people sleep colder than others, requiring say, a 15 degree sleeping bag when temps are in the twenties or warmer. Some people, myself included, have used a 30 degree bag on nights that dropped to the low twenties or colder. For a bag that will work for 3-season backpacking & camping, I'd suggest going with a 25-30 degree bag. On cooler nights, you can layer clothes & wear an extra pair of socks for warmth. On warmer nights, wearing less clothes while unzipping the sleeping bag part way can help keep you from overheating.

Weight is something that should be considered when shopping for a sleeping bag. For backpacking, especially long-distance hikes, it's wise to carry a bag that's under three pounds. Bags that are over three pounds generally fall in the category of 0 degrees and lower temperatures. Many lightweight bags are 1-1 ½ pounds. This makes a big difference when hauling pack weight over several days of hiking. Keep in mind also, a sleeping bag liner can help add warmth to your sleeping accoutrement. It'll also help prevent the bag from getting dirty too quickly, and minimize the normal wear & tear over time.

This article hasn't been a very thorough analysis of the process involved in choosing the right sleeping bag to buy by any means. Yet hopefully, one or two points here can help you in narrowing down the choices you have when walking into an outfitter. Remember, you don't need a $300 sleeping bag when a $100 or less bag will do just as well. Do a little research, read some reviews, ask lots of questions.

Finding the Right Camping Lantern

By Adam Wildon

Campers have relied on lanterns to light their way for hundreds of years. But today's camping lanterns are more powerful, varied and rugged than ever. That's good news for campers and hikers. Today's camping Lanterns come in a variety of styles perfect for every occasion. They've come a long way from the days in which camping lanterns were little more than glass globes holding a simple candle. The glass globe, which shielded the candles from the wind, was all that kept this type of lantern lit.

Campers today, though, can rely on three kinds of camping lanterns: kerosene, propane and battery powered. Kerosene lanterns have a base filled with kerosene, a flammable liquid. A wick is inserted into the kerosene and lit using a match or lighter. Then, a glass globe is placed over the wick to protect the flame. A small knob controls the level of flame; the lower the flame, the dimmer the light. Kerosene lanterns are still available today and have remained a popular choice among campers.

Another choice for camping lanterns is the propane lantern. Similar to kerosene, propane lanterns contain fuel (propane) and are very popular among campers. They are very convenient to use and produce a bright light when lit. Propane lanterns are available in most sporting good stores. Propane itself is also readily available, a must for campers in far-away places.

Battery powered lanterns are the third choice for camping lanterns. Rechargeable camping lanterns are the most popular of the battery powered versions. The reason is simple: When using a rechargeable camping lantern, campers don't have to worry about ending up with dead batteries. When choosing a rechargeable battery powered camping lantern, look for one that runs for at least five to seven hours without needing a charge. Rechargeable lanterns are environmentally friendly because they do not use disposable batteries that have to be thrown away after they run out of energy. Don't forget, though, that rechargeable battery lanterns need a power source. Without one, campers won't be able to recharge their lantern. Common power sources are 12-volt car chargers or AC adapters that hook into a car's cigarette lighter.

Most rechargeable battery lanterns use LED technology. This innovative technology consumes very little energy and creates a brilliantly bright light. LED technology also preserves the life of the battery, saving the owner from constant having to recharge it. Consumers can also save money by purchasing battery powered camping lanterns that use low energy fluorescent tubes. No matter what kind of camper you are - from weekend adventurer to seasoned professional - there's sure to be a camping lantern that's perfect for you.

You can learn about camping in the great outdoors, and a little more about that camping lantern at Camping Ferret. Before you set off to the great outdoors, you may also want to take a look at a Camping Guide.

Where Can I Buy a Tent?

There are many places from which you can purchase a tent to go camping, both new and second hand.

The internet is a goldmine of information and advice on buying a tent, from sources such as camping blog, retailer and manufacturer’s own websites. With a heady mix of facts supported by images and video, it is feasible to select and purchase your tent online without ever seeing it for real in a camping environment.

However, you should always try to view a ready assembled tent at a retail camping site, where you can not only get a sense of the size and space available, but also the quality of manufacture and the ability to try out regular operations such as opening/closing of doors and vents. When we were selecting our first tent, we visited many camping displays and my wife took the opportunity to test the operation of basic items such as the zippers on the doors. Lying down in the bedrooms also gives a good sense of what it would be like as a sleeping space. It is also worth examining how the display tents are bearing up to daily exposure to the weather, just as it would out on the campsite.

Our first tents were purchased direct from the camping retailer’s shop where we were given personal advice. However, once our knowledge grew we were confident enough to buy a bargain tent online, based on specification and our experience with other tents from that camping manufacturer. In terms of accessories we buy most items online to get the best deals but will also buy from our local camping retailer if we need to try the item or get some advice.

Ideally, whether you buy your tent online or offline, it is always best to see an assembled tent before making a decision to purchase, even if you end up buying it elsewhere to get the best price.

Below are some of the more popular places to buy a tent:

Camping Retailer Showrooms

Specialist camping dealers, including nationwide retailers, with tents pitched on display in a showroom or outdoors are an ideal place to buy. You should expect to get a good deal (with possible price matching) and expert advice. And if something goes wrong you have a local person and business that you can turn to for assistance. Personal recommendation is a great way to identify who to buy from and online forums may be a good source of recommendation.

Online Camping Retailers

Many camping retailers have showrooms and an online presence, so it is possible to view tents at the showroom and make a decision to buy later at home, concluding the purchase online. Some camping retailers give you the choice of having the tent delivered by courier to your home or collecting the tent in person from the retail showroom.

Other camping retailers have only an online presence, which due to lower overheads may occasionally mean lower prices. However, due to the fact that they have no offline presence, particular care should be taken to ensure that the online retailer has a track record of good service and satisfied customers. Again, searching online forums may highlight both positive and negative feedback on the seller.

eBay

eBay can be a good source of new and second hand tents. Private sellers and camping retailers sell tents on eBay and it is possible to find very competitively priced items.

However, care should be taken to avoid buying faulty or fake goods by checking out the feedback on the sellers.

We have bought and sold on eBay, selling an excellent tent to a couple who collected from our home and buying a tent from a specialist camping retailer at the lowest price available online – so it is possible to buy a quality bargain tent via eBay if you do your research and take care.

Camping Exhibitions and Shows

These can be a good opportunity to see the latest range of tents and view them on display. Apart from national exhibitions, local retailers may run outdoor shows at the beginning of the season. At the end of camping these events, display tents are often sold off at bargain prices.

Boot Sales

Local boot sales can be a source of real bargains. However, if you buy the tent and later find problems with it, you won’t be able to take it back. So again, if at all possible try to inspect the erected tent before parting with any payment.

Classified Adverts

Tents, are advertised for sale in the classified sections of local newspapers, specialist camping magazines and classified advert publications. Ideally you should try to inspect the erected tent before handing over any payment.

10 Great Reasons to Start Camping

You may have already decided to start camping and have your very own reasons for doing so. However, below you'll find more great reasons to go camping.

1. Camping is inexpensive compared to most types of vacation.

Whether you are a lone camper, a couple or a large family, camping is a very inexpensive way to take a break. Not only is the per night cost of your stay significantly less than a night in a hotel, once you have purchased a tent and other equipment, all of the major costs have been covered in the initial outlay.

And now that you own your tent and the equipment that goes with it, you can use it again and again, not only every year but as many times as you can get away during a season. Vacation in a hotel or apartment and you are faced with high accommodation costs each and every trip!

Camping vacations are tremendous value for money at any time, and in times of recession when we all have to tighten our belts, they may be the only viable option for a vacation at that time.
Put simply, a camping vacation can save you and your family a fortune in vacation costs.

2. Camping gives you independence and freedom from the herd mentality.

A typical package vacation or guided tour often means being herded from start to finish, beginning with the need to arrive at the airport at a specific time (often at an unsociable hour) and continuing during your time at the resort ....a merry-go-round of schedules, activities and the rules and regulations of the hotel and the holiday rep.

Camping gives you much greater choice and freedom to do what you want, when you want...and if your don’t like the campsite, move on to another one nearby.

3. Get closer to nature.

So many of us live in towns and cities and live our lives at a pace where we rarely get the chance to experience what is going outside our technological world. It is so easy for us to lose touch with the natural wonders around us.

Camping lets you get closer to nature and wildlife, to see, smell and hear things that we do not normally experience in our everyday lives.

4. Get closer to each other.

Getting away from it all in a tent can bring couples and families closer together. The opportunity to spend quality time together in a relaxing environment, without the distractions of a computer or television, can give you the opportunity to slow down and do things together that you would not have time or the inclination to do back home.

5. Step back in time and experience doing things the simple way.

Assuming that you are not planning a camping vacation with a microwave oven, TV, computer, fridge and the other “must haves” of modern living, camping will enable you to experience getting back to basics and the enjoyment of doing things in a more simple and maybe skilful way.

6. Your pets can enjoy a vacation too.

I must admit that I have not seen anyone take their cat or rabbit camping yet, but dogs will often be seen on a campsite with their owners. You can not only save on the expense of boarding kennels but also allow your pet to enjoy a vacation with the family.

7. Take your accommodation with you to a festival.

Taking your tent to a music festival gives you the best of both worlds, the enjoyment of camping and living in inexpensive accommodation nearby. And when the days entertainment is over you are but a short walk away from your bed.

8. Recreate memories.

Many of us will have experienced camping as a child, maybe as a scout or girlguide, or simply with friends. Others like myself and my wife took camping holidays in the early years of our relationship when money was in relatively short supply.

In adulthood, after many years of expensive and often sophisticated vacations, a camping holiday can be a great way of reliving those simple and happy memories of the past.

9. Build and tailor your accommodation to your specific needs.

Hotels and apartments are much the same and you get what you are given. With so many different types of tents available and an even greater choice of equipment and accessories, you have the means to put together a tent that is tailor made to the needs and requirements of you and your family.

And every time you arrive at a campsite you get the opportunity to put it all together again (and of course take it all down again when you leave). And each time you go camping you can make it a little different. You might even own a selection of tents for your different camping needs. We own a 6 berth tent for longer camping vacations, a 3 berth tent for weekends away and a compact tent for touring holidays in a MX-5/Miata roadster.

10. You can make new friends!

Sitting next to your tent, relaxing or enjoying a meal al fresco, it is easy to strike up a conversation and potential friendship with your neighbours. Likewise you might get to meet some interesting locals when you are out walking or visiting local sites.

You may also join a camping club and get to take part in rallies and other events where you can get to meet fellow campers on a regular basis.

Overall, camping is a great way to meet other people, in wonderful locations and at low cost. But be warned, you could get addicted to it!

Camping Kit Explained

By David Saltonstall

Even with a slumping global economy, families and friends still enjoy taking a holiday together. There are no better memories than those created with friends and family while on a holiday together. With travel costs rising, and consumer confidence waning, people are taking fewer luxury holidays, opting instead for self-catering holidays. One of the most popular and inexpensive self-catering holiday is a camping holiday. Camping is a fun, inexpensive way to enjoy holiday time with family and friends. Because travellers are foregoing the cost of hotel rooms and expensive restaurant meals, the cost of a camping holiday is only a fraction of a typical holiday.

Accommodation generally consists of a tent, sleeping bags, and a heater, depending on what time of year one is camping, and are much less expensive than any other means of travel. Camping is a great way to achieve an inexpensive holiday abroad. Camping tents can be as basic or luxurious as the user wishes. Some tents offer nothing more than a few stakes and a tarp as a means of cover. Others offer zip-off skylights for star-gazing at night, as well as separate rooms for separate campers. Some tents are sturdy enough to withstand even the harshest elements and retain heat, while others barely withstand a gentle breeze. Whatever kind of tent you opt for, it will be your home throughout your holiday, so make sure it is comfortable enough to get the job done.

Another important tool for a self-catering camping holiday is a good sleeping bag. There are several different kinds of sleeping bags available, as well. Some are just a basic sack, which offers room for one or two people. Other, more complicated sleeping bags are called "mummy bags", and are suitable for only one camper at a time. They are shape-conforming bags which restrict movement, but retain maximum amounts of body heat for very cold climates. Some people prefer to camp with a portable heater, allowing for more comfortable temperatures at night.

Portable heaters can run on small cylinders of propane, or hook up to larger tanks to get more time from them. Whatever kind of heater you prefer, it is bound to make your camping holiday more comfortable in the evenings. Camping holidays are becoming more and more popular as the economy wanes. The equipment required for camping can be relatively inexpensive as well, allowing for more versatility in holiday plans.
